Princeton Garden Theatre

Location: Princeton, NJ
Client:  Office of Design and Construction, Princeton University

Project Description:

At the corner of Nassau Street and Washington Road in downtown Princeton, New Jersey stands the Princeton Garden Theater, a first-run public cinema with dual 200-seat auditoria serving the community since 1920.

Princeton University’s Real Estate Department owns the theater which has played an integral role in community life by hosting fund-raisers, movie premieres, and special programs for community groups such as the Arts Council of Princeton and the Eden Institute, and for University groups such as alumni and student classes.

The theater was operating with antique 35mm film projectors and was long overdue for an overhaul of the surround sound systems, assistive listening systems and a comprehensive conversion to DCI-compliant digital video projection.

Vantage met with the Princeton University Office of Design and Construction and Real Estate Office and to determine performance and technical requirements and prepare a detailed recommendations and budget reports.  As part of its technical services, Vantage reviewed multiple contractor bids, shop drawings, submittals, samples and all technology-related project documentation.

Installed systems include:

  • 2K Christie digital video projection systems
  • New cinema servers with 2TB storage
  • New 7.1 Dolby theatrical surround sound systems
  • New ADA-compliant theater assistive listening systems
  • All new low-voltage infrastructure, wiring, equipment racks, connection panels and receptacles

Vantage assisted Princeton from pre-schematic phases through to final completion and rededication in 2013.  The PGT has reopened for public cinema showings, community activities and academic lecture.
